RECOMMENDED READING

An academic paper in the European Journal of Communication identifies The kiss of death – public service media under right-wing populist attack. A worthwhile review of one of the main sources of pressure affecting PSM nowadays.

In BBC Value for Audiences, the British PSM explains how it spends its money, with a focus on past and future sources of efficiency and effectiveness. Complementary to it, the UK’s National Audit Office has also published its report on The BBC’s strategic financial management, looking at challenges and opportunities for its next financial cycle.

The Edelman Trust Barometer 2021 has been published. As usual, an interesting global picture – with 28 countries covered – on the state of trust, including the media but also other areas. Worryingly, trust seems to be in decline on nearly every metric.

An interesting Medium post by our Head of Digital Ezra Eeman on increasing competition in the audio market and how digital is unbundling traditional radio: Clubhouse and the great unbundling of Radio.

A much sought-after topic is dealt with in How to Reach Swiss Digital Natives with News - A Qualitative Study, an academic project that triangulated different research methods to understand news consumption in the 12 to 20 years old age group. Among others, researchers looked at consumption times, news habits and behaviour, restrictions from their environment or media literacy.

Datareportal offers a tonne of data on social media, apps, mobile devices and online advertising, among others, in its Digital 2021: Global Overview slide deck, which also includes individualized country reports.

The European Audiovisual Observatory has made a very productive start to the year with the release of Trends in the VOD market in EU28, which looks at the SVOD and TVOD markets in the EU over the last 10 years. It shows that SVOD generated revenue of just EUR 12 million in 2010 but close to EUR 10 billion a decade later.

Additionally, the Observatory has also updated its Lumière VOD database to include TV films and series for the 46 countries it covers.

SAVE YOUR SEAT

The new Youth, Media and Culture Network is presenting a webinar series in March in collaboration with the International Association of Public Media Researchers. The three sessions will discuss how public service media could involve and orientate to young Generation Z (12 to 16 year olds). Topics include platforms, positive psychology and co-creation.

And last but not least: don't forget to check out other EBU events!
