'I chose Political Science with journalism in mind'

Alumnus Stan van Haasteren went to Northern Ireland in 1995 as a freelance journalist with a guitar strapped to his back and recently wrote a book about his experiences in Belfast. 'The big difference with then is that today there is no more violence. But it's still a divided city.'

People with a weak immune system are particularly vulnerable for serious respiratory infections. Leiden's immunologist Hermelijn Smits (LUMC) is researching a preventive nasal spray based on the body’s own bacteria. Please donate to develop the nasal spray.

Antibiotic resistance

Antibiotic resistance is an economic problem. Pharmaceutical companies cannot earn much from antibiotic research, so they do not invest in it. This makes it important that universities do so, says Ned Buijs. As a PhD candidate he took the first step in developing a new generation of antibiotics.
