‘Go do something with your life!’

A family friend told him to quit his self-destructive work in IT: ‘Go do something with your life!’ So at the age of 23, Anoma van der Veere started the Japanese Studies degree programme and is now based in Tokyo as a researcher and correspondent for the NOS broadcasting company.

Lockdown impacted brain development

What effect did the lockdown have on young people? Leiden researchers discovered an impact on the development of the brain areas involved in social behaviour and published their discovery in Scientific Reports at Nature.com.

‘I need something to look forward to'

It’s over a year ago since Russia started its war in Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Life has carried on for the Ukrainian students in Leiden as they try to make the best of things. Last year, we spoke to Sofia, who started her second year Psychology. How is she coping now?

‘Finally the chance to speak Dutch again’

With a sea of tulips in the garden, the Dutch Embassy residence in Tokyo really does feel like a small piece of the Netherlands in Japan. And for a few hours at the alumni event, the residence felt like a small piece of Leiden. Alumni were there to meet and practise their languages.
